Website and email terms, explained
Useful definitions from the Fundy Hosting guide, refreshed for today’s websites and email services.
- Hosting
- The server resources that store and deliver a website’s files and applications to visitors.
- Domain and gTLD
- A domain is a readable internet name. A generic top-level domain (gTLD) is an ending such as .com or .org; these endings are not limited to three letters.
- Hostname
- A name identifying a service or computer, such as the www part together with its domain. It can contain multiple labels separated by dots.
- IP address
- An address used to route traffic on an IP network. IPv4 addresses use dotted numbers; IPv6 uses hexadecimal groups separated by colons.
- HTML and hyperlinks
- HTML structures a web page. Hyperlinks connect text or other page elements to another resource or location.
- HTTP and HTTPS
- HTTP is a protocol used to exchange web requests and responses. HTTPS protects that exchange using TLS encryption.
- Sitemap
- A file listing important URLs to help search engines discover a site’s pages. Submitting one does not guarantee indexing or rankings.
- IMAP
- An email protocol that lets a mail app access and synchronise messages stored on a mail server. Use the provider’s encrypted connection settings.
- Internationalised domain name
- A domain containing characters from languages or scripts beyond basic ASCII. Software uses an encoded representation when needed for DNS.
- ICANN and IANA
- ICANN coordinates aspects of the global domain-name system. The IANA functions coordinate identifiers including the DNS root, IP address resources and protocol parameter registries.
- IIS
- Microsoft’s web-server software for Windows. Website software must be compatible with the server and version in use.
- Index page
- The default resource served for a directory or site address. Its filename and behaviour depend on the server configuration.
- Intranet
- A private network or set of internal services restricted to authorised users.
- ISP
- An internet service provider supplies internet connectivity or related services. It is not necessarily the company hosting your website.
